This school year brings a new change in the way students are chosen to be on student council at Pioneer. Before the new application process, the president and vice president decision for student council rested solely on the voice of students. In the past several years, student council leaders have made little if any noticeable change to our beloved high school. Students with this title often did not take the high-standing position seriously and there has been speculation that on college applications some of these students will write that they have been in a position of power without any real effort made.
This makes the student council much more equitable and honest. An individual who may have a great work ethic now has a better opportunity of being elected. The students who will be part of the council this year will have been chosen fairly and with the input of adults working in the building.
In addition, there will be less worry about competing with more well-known students for the position. In many previous elections, some of the candidates for president and vice president have not only presented weak, unsupported arguments as to why they should be chosen, their behavior was inappropriate in such a setting. Although a humorous speech is appreciated, the senior president of student council will be delivering an important speech at graduation.
Student council has been transformed from a “popularity contest” to a legitimate application process similar to a real job. Now, students have the potential to demonstrate their hard work and truthfully be proud of the accomplishments reached.
