2015 symbolizes the start of a new year, as well as new positions within the Student Council at Pioneer High School.
Senior Brett Boehman won the role of President, senior Maya Makhlouf got the Vice President position, junior Avishag Eliav is the Treasurer, and senior Sanika Kulkarni is this years Secretary.
The process of joining Student Council has changed this year, to become much more challenging. Pioneer got rid of the previous voting system that was in place, and thus representatives were selected much later.
“Once on Student Council, [they] divide up into four groups: Social, Philanthropy, Alumni-Connections, and Student Connections,” said senior Vice President and Co-Chair of the Social Committee, Maya Makhlouf. “Within each council [they] elect two co-chairs and three representatives.”
Students can nominate themselves or are nominated by others to run for the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Then during a full council meeting, the people who fill those offices are decided by the whole group.
This was the process junior and Student Council Treasurer, Avishag Eliav followed when running. At the meeting for Student Council, Eliav “presented a short speech about [herself], described why [she] was running, and why [she] felt [she] was qualified for the position.”
Eliav has yet to be formally briefed on what her duties as the Treasurer include. For now, she would assume that it involves keeping track of all the money that Student Council raises and all the money they invest in certain initiatives. “Manage what comes in and what goes out money-wise,” said Eliav.
Boehman’s duties as President include going to all the principal advisory meetings. Principal Tracey Lowder meets with a few students from Student Council to keep up good relations between the faculty and student council and to discuss fundraisers.
“It’s a way to streamline the process of things student council wants to do,” Boehman said. “We can get things approved and know what our parameters are within the activity.” Boehman’s other responsibilities include giving a speech at the senior graduation ceremony and organizing future reunions for the class of 2015.
“As Vice President, it is my job to help oversee the council as a whole,” said Makhlouf, “[I’ll be] making sure everyone is accomplishing their tasks and giving help where needed.”
Makhlouf’s duties as Co-Chair of the Social Committee include, “Overseeing any projects student council is working on, set up meeting times, and communicating with [their] advisor when [they] need help.”
Senior and representative of the Social Committee Hana Sinha also has important duties that assist in helping out the committee. “I help plan social events and fundraisers for the school, like Homecoming and Spirit Week,” said Sinha.
All the newly elected officers are excited to lead the new Pioneer Student Council and are optimistic about this year’s staff getting a lot more done than ever before.
