But to Pioneer senior Seamus Lynch, there is one man who is perfect for the job. That man is Bernie Sanders, the senator from Vermont, and a candidate for the Democratic Party for the 2016 presidential election.
According to Lynch, who is the leader of A2 High Schoolers for Bernie, “(Sanders) stands for policies that almost everyone believes in.” These policies, he said, include free health care, four years of free college tuition at public institutions, and banning private prisons.
Recently, Lynch, one of Sanders’s most enthusiastic local supporters, organized a group of Ann Arbor high school students to join his effort. “We are targeting the youth,” says Lynch. “Within the youth we find large numbers of people who are energized, who also want to get things done, and are willing to put in the work to get those things done.” Other Sanders policy priorities the teen group supports include reversing climate change, rebuilding crumbling roads and bridges, raising minimum wage to $15, expanding Social Security, and addressing police brutality, according to the group’s printed materials.
Although many members are not old enough to vote, they still want to get their voice out to the public and share what they believe to be a positive message. What matters, according to Lynch, is “us being out there shows people that we care, and that we hope to talk to voters all around southeast Michigan.” The group is handing out flyers, posting on social media, and sending members to Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti to educate and inform potential voters. “Anything that we can do to educate others about Bernie Sanders we are excited to do,” Lynch said.
And Lynch is working hard for Sanders without being paid a dime. “The Bernie Sanders campaign does not yet have the funds to open offices to have paid employees,” he said, so it is grassroots groups like his that the Sanders campaign is relying on right now. And while most national polls show Hillary Clinton with a comfortable 40-45% lead in the primary race, Sanders has gained much media attention for holding his own at 22-30%.
